MCA initiates ORNL research on next-generation metal wall and roof assemblies

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) and the Dept. of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have agreed on a multi-year research project aimed at evaluating the future needs of advanced metal roof and wall assemblies.
Knowing that building energy codes and standards will continue to become more stringent, the MCA recognized the need to generate data on dynamic metal roof and wall systems that can meet the anticipated requirements for energy efficiency. An important component of the research will be the evaluation of next-generation building-integrated photovoltaic technologies.

Green buildings avoid the doom and gloom trend inside Aust

Despite Wall Street's accumulated losses in the bear market reaching over US$10 trillion recently, the green building sector bucked the gloom.

In spite of some saying that it was the property sector that triggered the global credit crisis there was record attendance, over 30,000, at this year's GreenBuild Conference in Boston, up 25% on the previous year.

GreenBuild is the annual flagship event of the US Green Building Council. Attendance is a key marker of the health of the industry. It has grown every year since its inception in the late 90s and is now one of the largest industry conferences in the world. Many expected this year's event to falter, along with the rest of the economy, but GreenBuild's growth didn't skip a beat.

Metal construction industry on strong footing for 2009

As we roll into 2009, this seems like the proper time to reflect on where the metal construction industry currently stands—and where it’s likely to be headed in the future. I’ll start with the obvious, saying that 2008 was one of the most volatile years that the construction industry has seen in a long, long time.

In nearly 25 years covering metal construction, I’ve witnessed a few deep drops in the construction market and a steel shortage/price run-up situation in 2004 that rocked the industry. Each time, we moved onward as an industry and each time we learned some lessons that will never be forgotten. Those experiences made us better people and helped to shape stronger companies. I’m confident that the same will hold true when the current downturn runs its course.

Studies see green building as future economic key

Even as the dire financial news continues to dominate headlines, a cascade of newly released studies and reports points to green building as one of the growing bright spots for the U.S. economy.

In fact, as economic experts call for a recovery plan focused on green jobs and infrastructure, as consumers look to live in more economically sustainable homes, as businesses strive to cut operating costs, and as our national security needs depend on an end to reliance on foreign energy sources, green buildings' ability to deliver solutions to these pressing challenges promises to change the way we view the building industry.

As research comes in from diverse sources examining the interest in green
buildings among a wide range of Americans, the numbers keep painting the same
picture: The future of our built environment clearly centers on energy
efficiency, water reduction, systems that encourage cleaner indoor air, the use
of recycled and more sustainably developed materials, and communities that
coexist with their environments,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO &
Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “Over and over again, Americans are
saying the same thing: The key to a prosperous future is sustainability, and the
triple bottom line –environmental responsibility, economic prosperity and social
equity – is imperative as we move forward.

New TFC bracing products enhance building stability

Triangle Fastener Corporation has introduced two new bracer rod fastening products for the metal building industry, the BRACER II Bracing Washer and the STRESS-LOK Clamping Washer. These products are designed to increase the load capacity and minimize the slippage of the rod.

BRACER II features patented slip-resistant knurls that serve to minimize the slippage of the flat washer and rod, thereby increasing load capacity and stability of the frame. BRACER II also has a special nipple designed to provide deeper engagement with the web slot which translates into higher load capacity and easier installation at steep rod angles. The use of the product eliminates the need for back-up plates and welding, and its strength is proven via certified independent testing.
